Silent Transitions in Automata with Storage

چکیده

We consider the computational power of silent transitions in one-way automata with storage. Specifically, we ask which storage mechanisms admit a transformation of a given automaton into one that accepts the same language and reads at least one input symbol in each step. We study this question using the model of valence automata. Here, a finite automaton is equipped with a storage mechanism that is given by a monoid. This work presents generalizations of known results on silent transitions. For two classes of monoids, it provides characterizations of those monoids that allow the removal of λ-transitions. Both classes are defined by graph products of copies of the bicyclic monoid and the group of integers. The first class contains pushdown storages as well as the blind counters while the second class contains the blind and the partially blind counters.

Removing All Silent Transitions from Timed Automata

We show that all ε-transitions can be removed from timed automata if we allow transitions to be labeled with periodic clock constraints and with periodic clock updates. This utilizes a representation of the reachability relation in timed automata in a generalization of Difference Logic with periodic constraints. We also show that periodic updates are necessary for the removal of ε-transitions.

Undecidability Results for Timed Automata with Silent Transitions

In this work, we study decision problems related to timed automata with silent transitions (TAε) which strictly extend the expressiveness of timed automata (TA). We first answer negatively a central question raised by the introduction of silent transitions: can we decide whether the language recognized by a TAε can be recognized by some TA? Then we establish in the framework of TAε some old ope...

Generating Discrete Trace Transition System of a Polyhe-dral Invariant Hybrid Automaton

Supervisory control and fault diagnosis of hybrid systems need to have complete information about the discrete states transitions of the underling system. From this point of view, the hybrid system should be abstracted to a Discrete Trace Transition System (DTTS) and represented by a discrete mode transition graph. In this paper an effective method is proposed for generating discrete mode trans...

Characterization of the Expressive Power of Silent Transitions in Timed Automata

Timed automata are among the most widely studied models for real-time systems. Silent transitions, i.e., "-transitions, have already been proposed in the original paper on timed automata by Alur and Dill 3]. We show that the class TL" of timed languages recognized by automata with "-transitions, is more robust and more expressive than the corresponding class TL without "-transitions We then foc...

Monoids as Storage Mechanisms

Automata theory has given rise to a variety of automata models that consist of a finite-state control and an infinite-state storage mechanism. The aim of this work is to provide insights into how the structure of the storage mechanism influences the expressiveness and the analyzability of the resulting model. To this end, it presents generalizations of results about individual storage mechanism...
